On account of a breaking update UGC on 12th of April announced that now onwards the students shall be allowed to pursue two same – level degree courses or full-time degree courses at one time in physical mode either at the same or different universities.

From the 2022-2023 academic session the above choice shall be entertained under detailed guidelines issued by the commission. But the opportunity of offering students with simultaneous courses in the same academic year are creating conflicts for many educational experts and scholars, as they fear losing the quality of honours courses at an undergraduate platform.

According to the verse of Rajesh Jha, an honorable professor at Delhi University raised the question opposing the double degree course that dilutes the quality of honours degree, saying that the purpose of indulging into an honours programme is to comprehend intense and advanced knowledge to the student’s acknowledgement.

Again the head of the Horticulture department at GB Pant University, Ranjan Srivastav looks quite upset with the decision saying subjects like Horticulture where practical placed with same importance as theory subjects; altogether students and faculty might get confused scheduling alongside courses.

On the contrary the academicians claimed the above decision as an unnecessary step acquainting us with the fact of its pre-availibility. Also if they want to study double courses they would prefer to go with BSc and BA already running in most central universities.

Under this provision the peers will not be able to avail any other interest if they want also. Lightening up about its long run side effects on academic scores and mental health along with impact on physical health due to overload of studies.

Post-availability of  interdisciplinary subjects in Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP), no one is very fond of this continuation in degree courses only in order to prompt students on the grounds of ‘flexibility’.

Rather than eyeing this notification  as an orthodoxical manner, it can be taken up as a good option for the students who want to fetch a double degree. Merely, not acting as a discredit provision under any means of hampering existing programmes.

This is utmost choiceable and preferable for the learners to increase extra skill and expertise for future ready employment; thus not falling under any compulsion activity.

According to the draft guidelines served by UGC, students are allowed to take up the dual degree programme under the following means:-

  1. Students can intend two simultaneous degree courses in physical mode.
  2. The class timings shall be scheduled in such a manner so that it doesn’t overlap one another.
  3. Students may continue the simultaneous courses via online or distance learning.
  4. The provision of dual degree shall only be entertained under non-technical programmes according to the norms undertaken by UGC.
